How should we use "others", "the others", "other" and "the other"?
I don't seem to understand my teacher's explanation for these words.

The ones with the refer to something specific, the ones with a plural s can't have a noun after them.

Some like coffee, others prefer tea.
There were a few others who hadn't seen the accident.

Only five of the players showed up. I don't know why the others didn't come.
