Others and the others

Hi everybody! I haven't been here for a long time and I enjoy joining us now! I wish you Happy New Year and every wish comes true!

Let's take the matter. I can't understand the difference between others and the others. The book tells me that: "others"- "other people" and "the others" means "those not mentioned".

Two climbers went to the top and the others/others waited in the tent. Here we used the others because those who didn't attempt to climb were climbers too, didn't we?

Young women like horror films but others/the others hate them.

Thank you very much. Any other example would be appreciated.

I wish you an illustrious new year as well! The others refers to a specific group, usually rather small. If you are expecting five people to arrive, and you know who will be coming, but only three arrive, you can say: Where are the others?

  • I wish you an illustrious new year as well!
  • The others refers to a specific group, usually rather small.
  • If you are expecting five people to arrive, and you know who will be coming, but only three arrive, you can say: Where are the others?
  • So the others would be better in your first sentence.
  • As to your last example, my preference would be: Some young women like horror films, others / some hate them.

You need not know those people personally but you need a specific group to use the definite article (the).
