To me they are both OK and carry different meanings.

Mary and other teachers ... => some teachers (and Mary was one of them) went home early
Mary and the other teachers ... => all the teachers (and Mary was one of them) went home early

Mary and other / the other teachers went back home early.

In the right context you can use either one; however, I think you will find that "Mary and the other teachers..." is by far the most common. If only some of the teacher went home early you might say "Mary and some of the other teachers..."
