Other than by chance

The sentence (my translation):

I don't hang out with such kind of people other than by chance.

Context:

- Have you dated Helen's sister?
- Of course not! Someone told me she's a harlot. I don't hang out with such kind of people other than by chance.

"Hang out" is a long-term action, so it wouldn't really fit with "by chance."

Consider:
"No, she's not really my type."

or for a stronger expression:
"I wouldn't be seen dead with her!"

Thank you, teechr. But the fact is that he really dated Helen twice. What the man says to his friend is merely an excuse.
Perhaps we can change the verb 'hang out' into another one. I'd like to point out that in the original sentence he says 'by chance' (of course, in his own language), implying he didn't know she was a harlot when someone saw them some time ago. Yo

Sorry, typo error. I meant 'Helen's sister twice'.

I don't mix with such people except by (some unfortunate) chance.
