Other than as a "substitute" for except ?

Sentence: "These days NGOs achieve nothing other than public wrath"

My question/doubt: I've by mistake used "other than" instead of "except" in the above sentence. But it doesn't seem odd. I came to know about my blooper when I checked the meaning of other than. So my question is this sentence wrong ? Is is is totally out of convention ? What meaning does it make to you ?

Thanks
