Is the first sentence correct?

Other than traveling, they don't need a security detail. They don't need them when they are at home or in their home town.

No, it should be "Other than when travelling ...".

When travelling [sorry -- I spell "travelling" with two l's], they need a security detail. They don't need it when they are at home [aren't they in their home town when they're at home? Do you really need "or in their home town"?].
