Most dictionaries consider 'other than' a phrasal preposition, which would be followed therefore by a noun: other than washing/to wash the dishes. (This makes 'washing' a gerund and 'to wash' an infinitive used as a noun.)
Some dictionaries consider 'other than' adverbial and therefore follow it with a definite preposition: 'other than by washing the dishes'.
