What is the context? Both could be used in a sentence.

My new car is different than the old car.

Some years ago, a good friend of mine was hospitalised and I told him I would come and visit him at the hospital. We were best friends and shared many values together.

He said'' I wouldn't like to have any visiors other than my wife and daughter''.

I'd say that "different than" doesn't exist! It's "different from"...

You're right, pieanne, sorry. Well, again, I guess that different from can replace other than, but other than cannot replace different from, am I right?

According to this definition 'Mr. Smith was certainly other than other people' sounds kinda weird (if it sounds at all), doesn't it?
