other

Hi,

Normally, a person would use 'another' in front of a count noun to denote a situation where he wants to say it is one other of that thing.OK, but for others like 'furniture' or 'evidence', it seems to be 'other' rather than 'another' to denote the same notion of one other (as in the case of a count noun). I have used phrases like 'other evidence' and not 'another evidence' but don't know the reason. Can you help?

How about this? Why 'other' is used for this definitional sentence I got from the Collins/Cobuild Compact English Learner's Dictionary? Do you think it is used because 'a' is used in front of 'castle', which is also being used for 'building'?

A fortress is a castle or other strong, well protected building, which is difficult for enemies to enter.
