Osculate

Hi.

I came across osculate as a verb to mean kiss. I wonder if this is a common word in English language.

I have the impression that, it should be very formal or literary.

I would be grateful if you could tell your opinion about it.

'Osculate' is usually used only in a jocular fashion. Most of us learned the word in junior high school, used it with glee for a year or so, and then abandoned it as useless.
