Is there anything to the claim that ""qahwa" means "that which prevents sleep"?
The OED says (ad. Arab. qahwah, in Turkish pronounced kahveh, the name of the infusion or beverage; said by Arab lexicographers to have originally meant ?wine' or some kind of wine, and to be a derivative of a vb.-root qahiya ?to have no appetite.'

turkish kahve (with the back allophone of /k/, which is phonemic with loanwords).

it was originally a word for wine though some think that the word was also associated with Kaffa (place in Ethiopia) where it grows in the wild (but influenced by the name of the wine). there are some historical problems with this. see Enc. of Islam II "K.ahwa". the article says teh wine name is of doubtful etymology, and places its drinking circa 1400 CE.

qahiya means to have little appetite. alledgedly the wine made one losse appetite. acc. to al-munjid .
