The universality of the souvenir can be understood. in light of its underlying role or function. As an actual object, it concretizes or makes tangible what was otherwise only an intangible state.

About the 'or' in bold, is it safe to say that it introduces a synonym or explanation of the preceding word 'concretize(s)'? Or is it used to link an alternative?
