optional and

Will should be used,[and] not would.

Why this, [and] not this?

Why men marry some women, [and] not others.

Is and optional in the above sentences? Is there any difference?

Thanks in advance!

To me, but is also possible. But quite often, you will hear sentences like this with 'and' or a pause. I wonder what the meaning is when 'and' or pause is used.
