Vocabulary

optimist or optimistic

I`m a bit confused in using the right word . Which one is the proper structure:
1. I`m optimistic about ..... (adj)
2. I`m optimist about ..... ( noun)

Top answer

I'm optimistic about our chances. ) I'm an optimist about the theater. (This is possible but best avoided.

  • I'm optimistic about our chances.
  • ) I'm an optimist about the theater.
  • (This is possible but best avoided.
  • It conveys nothing that "I'm optimistic" does not.
  • Also, "about" is a bit clumsy to my ear.

I'm optimistic about our chances. (This is the usual form.)

I'm an optimist about the theater. (This is possible but best avoided. It conveys nothing that "I'm optimistic" does not. Also, "about" is a bit clumsy to my ear. I would expect something more like, "I'm an optimist when it comes to ....")

I don't follow you, but a determiner is not necessary: "I'm optimistic about democracy."
