Opportunity

I checked the pronunciation of opportunity on M-W.com, but can I use the so-called 'flap-T' for the second /t/ in 'opportunity', pronouncing like 'opportunidy'?

Thanks.

I would say yes, you can do this. Pronouncing it like "opportunidy" would sound more North American. If you were to say "opportunity" and really make the "t" sound for the second "t", you would be giving it a more British pronunciation.

  • I have never heard the term "flap-T" though.
  • It's not a common term in English for the sounds that letters make.

The t in the -ity suffix can be pronounced either way in American English -- ity or idy.
