Opposite with is or there is?

Hi!

Which version is correct (maybe both?)

Opposite the church is a shop.

Opposite the church there is a shop.

Of course, "there is a shop opposite the church" would sound the best, but I want to know the correct usage in the first case.

Help, please!

Thanks a lot Clive!

Is it the same with other prepositions? Can we say that one of them is more natural for a native to say? Or that they show a slightly different perspective, e.g. one would be used more in speech and the other in e.g. written descriptions?

e.g. In front of the porch is a small garden.
In front of the porch there is a small garden.

Those are all OK.
But I think the most common form in everyday English is
eg There is a fox in the box.
Of your two alternatives. In the box is a fox is probably the more literary.
