Opposite to

Hello.
Why do you use to in the second sentence and why not in the first? Or there is some kind of mistake?

They live in the house opposite mine.
Angela's house is opposite to ours.

(1) They live in the house opposite mine. [opppsite:preposition]
(2) Angela's house is opposite to ours. [opposite:adjective]

I think you can rephrase them as;
(3) They live in the house opposite to mine.
(4) Angela's house is opposite ours.

But caution! We cannot say;
(5) His opinion is opposite mine.

As Nona indicated, "opposite to" sounds strange in your second sentence. To me, the normal ways of saying the sentence would be: "Angela's house is facing ours." or "Angela's house is across from ours." I had understood the usage of 'opposite' as I stated above, but now I feel I might be wrong.
