Opposite from

Hello everyone

I saw in a journal a phrase with 'opposite from'. I did not thought that this was a possible combination. I looked the internet and can see'opposite to' and 'opposite of'. Can someone please say me if this combination now is become useable?

Thank you

Can you give the whole sentence? Usage depends on context, and it's hard to answer a question like this when no context is given. CJ

OK thank you.

The Japanese view on this is opposite from that of the French who prefer a more direct approach.

"opposite from" seems fine to me. "opposite to" would not be out of place either. Both are OK.

______________

With "the opposite", however, I would use "of": "the opposite of". (But not in this particular sentence.)

Thank you for your reply

I have seen 'opposite to' in phrases like 'her house is opposite to mine' as I am French I use 'facing' as it is easier for me and my teacher tells me this is fine.

Yes. "facing" is good for that situation. Strangely, I prefer no preposition at all after "opposite" when I want that meaning:

Her house is opposite mine.

Saying 'opposite from' is actually incorrect grammar, because it's not really the correct usage of the word 'from'. That said, it doesn't tend to sound out of place when used. Just don't use it in an essay or if you're writing a book or anything.

Using "opposite from": Try to remember that an affirmation usually expresses the exact opposite condition from the negative condition in which you find yourself. Is this correct?
