Turn on the light/ Turn the light on.

Turn off the light/ Turn the light off.

Get on the dance floor.

Get off the dance floor.

etc..

Strangely you can't say Get the dance floor on or get the dance floor off, conversely. Unless you meant where to put the dance floor itself, or what to take the dance floor off of.

Not strange at all, canderson. In 'turn on', 'on' is an adverb. In 'get on', 'on' is a preposition.

Quite right Mr. Micawber. To be here will be a great help to re-learning the parts of speech.

Were/Are you an English teacher? Thanks anyhow.

Sincerely,

Chris
