Neither is wrong, but they mean slightly different things. There are two possible meanings:

A. The article has multiple viewpoints that are in opposition to each other, or
B. The article has viewpoints which oppose something outside the article ("The speech had one viewpoint; the article had opposite viewpoints."

Do you mean opposing or opposite to someone else who has been mentioned? If so, I would say "The article took an opposite/opposing view on gun control".
