opposed to vs. as opposed to

Dear all, I want to ask about the difference between 'opposed to' and 'as opposed to'.The sentence in question is;'It's like trying to talk to someone who's walking in front of you, as opposed to someone who's face-to-face with you.'Here, is it okay if I remove the word 'as ' and rewrite the sentence like this;It's like trying to talk to someone who's walking in front of you, opposed to someone who's face-to-face with you.'
