Operate on

1) When I operated on my right knee, I was afraid of death.


It is said the above sentence is flawed and the correct one is the folllowing one:

2) When I had my right knee operated on, I was afraid I might die.

What is wrong with the first sentence? Some years ago I underwent knee surgery. I ran a lot for years and gave up after the surgery.
