If "open" expresses the condition and "opened" expresses the action, why can't that be applied to close/closed?

The gate is close.

The gate is closed (by someone).

Historical accident, and probably not easily traced out, but the adjective evidently came first in the case of 'open'-- thereby precluding the -ed adjective, while 'closed' appeared in the more usual way.

The gate is close. NOT CORRECT. (The gate is closed. = The gate is not open.)
The gate is closed (by someone). (Fine. The word 'closed' is used as a verb.)

Any idea why?
