Open/Open up

Hello,

I realize there are shades of difference between these two, but how would you differentiate between:

- I open up/open the shop every morning.

- I opened/opened up the box.

I think they are the same in the first, but I am not so sure about the second. "Open up the box" would probably mean "open it up fully/completely". Can't "open" have the same meaning, though?

Thank you.

Yes, the shades of difference between Open and Open Up may be lost in time. Shopkeepers were said to “open up” in the morning; and it likely involved removing a padlock and/or raising a protective overhead gate. My thesaurus lists ‘open up’ under ‘begin’.
