Opened my eyes?

Hi,
could you please correct the following sentence for me. I want to know whether I'm using the verb "conceive" correctly because I'm not sure if I have to put "of" at the end. Please rewrite my sentence in the way you would say it, to sound more natural giving the same meaning.

"After talking to him about the subject for an hour, he literally opened my eyes to things i didn't quite conceive of."

Thank you.

Top answer

" Yes, 'of' is needed there. Capital I. If 'he literally opened my eyes', it sounds like he used his fingers to push up my eye-lids.

  • " Yes, 'of' is needed there.
  • Capital I.
  • If 'he literally opened my eyes', it sounds like he used his fingers to push up my eye-lids.
  • The first clause is a dangling modifier, because it refers to 'I' and not 'he'.

Hi,

"After talking to him about the subject for an hour, he literally opened my eyes to things i didn't quite conceive of."

Yes, 'of' is needed there.

Capital I.

If 'he literally opened my eyes', it sounds like he used his fingers to push up my eye-lids.

"quite" seems inappropriate here. I would use "even" . Otherwise it is ok.

Thank you, Clive.

But I did't understand your sentence; "The first clause is a dangling modifier, because it refers to 'I' and not 'he'

Would you please explain it (for/to?) me?

Thank you.

Hi,

Consider -.

Falling from the sky, he saw a plane. Sounds like he was falling.

Walking down the street, a snake bit me. Sounds like the snake was walking.
