Open wide eyes

Hello,

He was so happy to his freind that 
 
1) his eyes wide opened.
2) his eyes open wide.
3)his eyes  open wider.
4) wide-openeyes showed his happiness.

I know it is a form of body language but what does exactly mean wide open eyes? Does it have the same meaning
when we talk about mouth?
