[open until] or [stay open until]

(1) What time does the shopping center open until tonight? (my example)

(2) What time does the shopping center stay open until tonight? (my friend's revision)

My non-native English speaking friends think I need the word "stay". Is my original example wrong?

Thank you very much for your time and help.
