"The day after our first game, I opened the door to a knock and saw people with pens and pads and cameras with lights burning."
I don't understand the timing of "opened the door to a knock". I would have understood the timing "opened the door to people with pens and pads.....", which I take to mean that "the narator opened the door and saw people standing just outside the door." My limited understanding of "opened the door to a knock" suggest that the "knock" came after the opening of the door. Am I wrong?
