Open season, witch hunt

Hi,

“There was open season for everyone involved in the scandal.”

“They started a witch-hunt for everyone involved in the scandal.”

Is the preposition ‘for’ correct?

I would not say "there was open season". The metaphor is too alive for that. I would put it "It was open season on everyone …."
