open it up

She held up a plastic bag and opened it [up] to show me.

What's the difference with and without 'up'?
Thanks.

Hi N2G Your sentence is a little odd without any further context saying what she showed you. Presumably, though, she showed you something inside the bag. The addition of 'up' is not absolutely necessary, but I'd say it does tell you that she opened the bag more than just a little bit.

Thanks for the advice. It is mentioned in the preceding sentence which I didn't include in the post that she brought a carton of ice-cream.

Good explanation! Thanks, Yankee.
