Onto vs On

Hi,

I saw the movie Skyfall yesterday. My question is related to one of the sentences used in the movie.

The sentence is:-

Footage leaked onto internet.

Why ONTO, why not ON?

Footage leaked on internet.

Per my knowledge, ONTO is usually used when one has to deal with movement or direction.

What are the different usage of ONTO?

By the same token, Pass this information ONTO/TO him. [Why ONTO, instead only TO ? ]

Helpful answers are appreciated.

Thanks,
Harry
