Hmmm - I would use "onto" with slams.

i think its ON because of "table"..

does onto means "in" somehow?

slams it onto the table

slam onto; slam into; slam against are the typical combinations.

You can slam into something. You can't slam in it.
You can slam your fist into someone's face. You can't slam your fist in someone's face.
You can slam something onto the floor/wall. You can't slam it on the floor/wall.
You can slam something against the wall.

Hi CJ

You can slam something onto the floor/wall. You can't slam it on the floor/wall.

Just to confirm: Jimmy slams a notebook on/onto the table. (Both prepositons are fine.)

Hi,
interesting topic. I know you can say "go into the kitchen" or "go in the kitchen", "jump onto the roof" or "jump on the roof"... but now it seems sometimes you need a preposition that expresses movement... Maybe I know why. It must be because "slam" is a "strong" verb, like "crash". You say "crash into a tree" not "crash in a tree"... so certain "violent" verbs probably are like "crash".

I'm sorry I can't agree. While both are grammatically correct, on is less than fine. onto is by far superior.

Yes, I agree that the stronger, more forceful or violent verbs tend to take the --to forms of the prepositions.

KooyeenI know you can say "go into the kitchen" or "go in the kitchen", ...

I prefer "into" in such examples, because it implies that you're heading somewhere, moving in a certain direction (in + to), while "in" implies that you are settled / located / situated somewhere:

She is going into the kitchen.
