Onto

I want to pass the land on to my son OR is it onto my son. Still a little confused, but I'm thinking the former because it would literally be on top of my son in the latter. Am I correct?

The correct structure is: Pass something on to somebody Pass the book on to me when you have finished reading with it. I passed your message on to my mother. Tom
