Only smearing it more

Hi teachers. Is this OK? (in particular the last clause)

He takes a bite of his burger and spills ketchup down his shirt. He tries to wipe it off with his hand, only smearing it more.

anonymous Is this OK? (in particular the last clause) The grammar is OK, but the sense is off. He can't smear it more until he has smeared it once, and he hasn't done that yet.
