ONLY OR THE ONLY

Hi,

Which is correct? Is the word 'only' an adjective or determiner?

He was only person (the only person??) in lineup with goatee.
He was only person (the only person??) free to go.

These are right: H e was the only person in the lineup with a goatee. He was the only person free to go. ' Only ' appears in different guises, but here I think it is just an adjective.

I find this very contextually fitting. You got a laugh from me, Mr. M.
