"please provide a telephone number at which one of our representatives can contact you _______there is an emergency."
a) only if b) in the event
The correct answer is b) in the event. I was so much surprised that the correct answer was b) in the event.
Here are some questions. Q1) Why I can't use "a) only if" in that sentence ? I couldn't understand it because I felt a)only if much more suitable. Am I wrong ?
Q2) Does the phrase of "in the event" mean a kind of conditional ? As far as I know, If you want to use it for expressing a conditional, you should use it like " in event of ", not just " in the event" , if what I have known is right, it should be like this. " in the event of the case there is an emergency " Is my thought incorrect?
Top answer
Only if would emphasize that you would be contacted for absolutely no other reason than an emergency. In the event of is the standard phrase.
