Is it OK to write "I studied Italian ON the Washington University" Is it possible to write "ON" the University?

"at" is the preposition you need:

I studied Italian at Washington University.

I studied Italian at the University of Washington.

Ok I get it. But why did you put "the" before University of Washington and no "the" before Washington University? Is the meaning different?
