On/In the list

Hi everyone,

Do i say "You name is not in the list" or "You name is not on the list" ?

ON. The word "on" is ALSO used in English to mean "printed, written or patterned onto the the surface of". Thus, we say that wallpaper is ON the wall, writing is ON a page, and so on, even though these things are not vertically above.

But i always heard ppl saying "Your name is not in the list". So "ON" should be the correct word to use is it?

In my opinion, ' in ' can be used when there are a few lists. Your name is not in either of them.

I suspect that whoever said "Your name is not in the list" got it wrong. That wouldn't be the normal way to say it. It should be "Your name is not ON the list".

(Something can be IN the papers, or IN a book, because here we mean IN quite litera
