on/in the bus

Hello everyone,
I've got some questions about being on or in the bus. I understand that normally we're on the bus rather than in the bus, but how does it work if I sit on/in the bus or if I want to say that I was on/in the bus crammed with people. In this case, 'on' sounds a bit odd to me.
Thank you for your help.
