"...the European presence in the subcontinent never amounted to more than 0.05 per cent of the total population."

In the above, should it be "on the subcontinent"?

I think that "in" is more commonly used. "On" is usually used for islands.

What I have learnt at school was "on" should exclusively used for "maps", "continent", "island", "committee", etc. Maybe, has it anything to do with the difference between British and American English?
