Which of the sentences 1-5 are correct in the given contexts:

I thought he was a bad man.

1-He was.
2-He was one.
3-He was so.

I thought he was bad,

4-He was.
5-He was so.

Most people just say "He was" for both cases. The addition of "one" in the second sentence seems completely unnecessary.

The ones with "so" seem to me to be emphatic denials of a preceding negation.

— He was not (a) bad (man).
