Wow this is deep! I think it means that the subject's only contribution to history is by adding his own damaged appearance to the many that are similar from the past, when he dies.

By presenting a question like this without context, you are inviting a whole host of imaginative answers which may be far off the mark and thus only more confusing for you.

The answer is "of history". Here's my guess.

The writer is himself a historian. He claims that when he writes the history of anything, the very act of writing about it destroys, disfigures, or distorts history in some way. In other words, his interpretation of history may be wrong, may cause others to think about it in the wrong way.
