one's head at sb

Hello,

Could you, please, explain to me, what it means "cock one's head at sb"? The text is from "Parrot and Olivier in America" by Peter Carey.

I knocked him so hard with my shoulder he nearly fell upon his arse.

He gathered himself and dusted down his bright blue frockcoat and patted at his ruff. I could have punched his pointy nose.

"Hello!" He cocked his head at me. "What is it old chap?"

Thanks for your help.

He turned his head to the side in a somewhat sudden, jerky movement, the way a bird does when it wants to see something from a new angle. It's a reference to a head movement typical of birds.
