One substitition 3

1. Mary adopted the assumption that John helped the children, and I adopted the same one.

2. Mary adopted the assumption that John helped the children, and I adopted the one that Sue helped the children.

3. Mary adopted the assumption that John based his theory on, and I adopted the same one.

4. Mary adopted the assumption that John based his theroy on, and I adopted the one that Sue based her theory on.

My book says #2 is ungrammatical.

To me, it looks like #2 is ungrammatical because I think 'the one' refers to 'the assumption' while #4 is grammatical because 'the one' in refers to the italic. (Even if this was correct, this confuses me)

Ah.. really? 'one' in #1 and #3 refers to 'assumption'?

Since the underlined part in #3 can be put 'John based his theory on the assumption', I thought 'one' in #3 refers to the underline.

Then, the meaning 'and I adopted the same one' in both #1 and #3 means the same as you said 'one' refers only to 'assumption'?

They certainly do for me. Other members may have other opinions.
