One side of the stairs

What is the meaning of this sentence? I always walked up the one side of the stairs.

Context

Man 1: The employers of this apartment house know nothing of your visits here.
Man 2: That's true. I always walked up the one side of the stairs. They thought I was visiting my uncle, not Susie.

It seems that it can mean to go up in a secret way, but how is it possible to go upstairs without being seen by the clerk?
What implies walking up one side of the stairs?

Top answer

Hi When Man 1 says "here" I think he means Susie's room. The clerk would have known that Man 2 visited the building, but would never have thought that it was to visit Susie Suppose Susie lives on the corridor on the left, at the top of the stairs, but Man 2's uncle lives on the corridor to the right. Suppose the clerk knows about the uncle, but not Susie Provided that the clerk sees Man 2 always heading for the right-hand side of the stairs, the clerk will assume it's a visit to the uncle.

  • Hi When Man 1 says "here" I think he means Susie's room.
  • The clerk would have known that Man 2 visited the building, but would never have thought that it was to visit Susie Suppose Susie lives on the corridor on the left, at the top of the stairs, but Man 2's uncle lives on the corridor to the right.
  • Suppose the clerk knows about the uncle, but not Susie Provided that the clerk sees Man 2 always heading for the right-hand side of the stairs, the clerk will assume it's a visit to the uncle.
  • Presumably, the top of the stairs is out of the clerk's sight, and then the man quickly crosses to the other corridor That's how I would read it Dave
