One sentence or two sentences

But some Asians saw the world as consisting of continuously interacting substances, "so" their attempts to understand it caused them to be oriented toward the complexities of the entire "field," that is, the context or environment as a whole.

Some say the text consists of one sentence because they see the underlined part as a clause whereas i think there are two sentences because I see the underlined part especially "so" as a conjunction like "and" or "but"

Is it made of one complete sentence or two complete sentences?
