'The prices of houses have gone up by the double'


OR

OR

OR

'The prices of houses have gone up very much'


Tell me which ones are grammatical and idiomatic

'The prices of houses have doubled' is the expected form. I don't really like any of the four you have listed, JK. 'Much' is not used much in the affirmative (often it is replaced by a word like 'considerably'); 'by the double' is not grammatical; 'by double' I don't think is logical.
