One question(using extended as an adjective)

Hello,

I have one question...is this grammatically correct or can it be interpreted as correct in any way:

He has extended knowledge about cars.

I know I should use extensive, but is using extended really grammatically incorrect? I have found in the dictionary it could be used as an adjective(like - surgeons with extended experience).

Thanks.
