One person paying for the whole

Hello....

How can we express this idea?

Some people gathered to eat food and drink. I thought that it was like everybody paying some money but later I found out that it was a celebration party and one specific person was paying for the whole event.

Then, I can say...

I thought it was a ______ but he paid for all the event.

What can I fill the blank with?

Maybe "club together"?

pructus Maybe "club together"? I don't know that one. I thought we were going to split the bill, but he paid for all of it.
