the author explains the effect of the quality of light and standplace on the image of a table. then he says some see it as a brown rectangle, others as a black parallelogram, and so on. There is no way of knowing which (if any) of these experiences is the “real” colour or “real” shape of the table. People see images that are false, non-existent, or one out of many.
